Office 2000 : user install at each run

Richard

Hi,

I have a trouble with a Office 2000 installation (Office 2000 Premium
SR-1a) running on a Win2K SP3 computer. The installation was done using a
transform to customize the settings.

Each time a user (with admin rights or not) run an application from the
Office suite (Excel,Word,PowerPoint,Outlook,...), the "user part" of the
installation will be run again.

Apparently, this trouble appeared simultanously with the April 15th 2003
bug. The one in which Office ask to register online. I applied the patch
described in KB 818798. This doesn't the problem I am describing.

My main problem is that this problem is seen on the master that I use to
"clone" (with Ghost) my computers. And the problem is already seen "in the
fields".

This "master" image was first made on a Win2K SP2, on which Office 2000
SR-1 was installed. Win2K got upgraded to SP3. Later, this image was used to
another computer model, which differs mainly in video and ethernet card (as
well as CPU speed).
I had no trouble until lately.
This "reinstallation" is not to be seen on computer of the same model as
the one used to take the original "image".

As the April 15th's bug really looks like a "product key activation" bug, I
wonder if the fact that the underlying hardware has substancially changed
really makes the difference.

At the same time, I have tried some other tracks. I have read that some of
the install information gets not correctly translated when you upgrade from
MSI 1.2 to MSI 2.0 (which is what happends when you upgrade Win2K to SP3).
Can this be a cause for this behavior ?

I tried several things :
- applying the KB818798 patch,
-uninstalling and reinstalling the same Office2K SR-1 setup,
-uninstalling, reinstalling Office2K along with the KB818798 patch,
-the same with using "eraser2K" after the uninstall. (which kills my NAV
setup as well !),
-forcing a "really dirty" uninstallation by using MsiCleanUp utility (in a
hope to really clean the registry from the installation information) and
reinstalling Office,
-reinstalling Office2K SP3 w/KB818798 instead of SR-1,
-downgrading MSI from 2.0 to 1.2 (quite a feat) before reinstalling
everything.

So far no success.
I can redo a "master image" from scratch. But I had really liked to be able
to fix the one already in use...

Do anybody has any idea about my problem ? Did anybody have seen something
similar ?

Thanks for any help !

PS : Oh yes ! I have Works2000 "onboard" as well. Don't ask me why... I
tried while uninstalling it as well.
