Office 2000 Using Wrong Address Book - Makes Letter Wizard Crash in Word

D

David Tong

My Office 2000 installation seems to have started using the Outlook Express
address book instead of Contacts. This happens for one user only. It still
works normally for other users.

Symptoms are:

1. Word crashes when I click on Address Book in Letter Wizard. Event
Properties shows 'Faulting application winword.exe, version 9.0.0.8216,
faulting module schdmapi.dll, version 9.1.2318.0, fault address 0x00016abb.'

2. Outlook 2000/Tools/Address Book now shows the same as Outlook
Express/Tools/Address Book. ('Address Book version 6.00.2900.2180').
Previously it gave a different window (on which clicking Help gave 'About
Microsoft Outlook').

I've tried repairing Office 2000 without success. I've also confirmed that
Internet Explorer/Internet Options/Programs shows 'Outlook' not 'Address
Book' in the Contact List window.

The system is XP Pro/SP2 and the Office 2000 installation is fully updated.

I've drawn a blank with Google so I'd appreciate any suggestions about
getting it back to normal.

Perhaps you are not aware that Outlook 2000 exists as two entirely separate
programs that function entirely differently. Internet Mail Only mode is not
capable of using the Outlook Address Book Service so must use Outlook
Express' engine. That's why you'd get that version designation.

Clarify what version you are using and the steps that produced your problem.
Are your users using different versions?

Sorry, I forgot to mention I'm using Internet Mail Only configuration. Also
by other 'users' I meant other logins on the same laptop.

Good news on problem (1). I used IE/Internet Options/Programs to change
from 'Outlook' to 'Address Book'. This greyed-out Letter
Wizard in Word. I then set it back to 'Outlook' (as it always had been
previously). After that Letter Wizard in Word worked normally without
crashing.

But problem (2) has not altered. OK it's not crucial, but something
seems to have altered the way the data in 'Address Book' presents itself
when accessed from Outlook, but only for my normal login.

Not sure if these issues began before or after, but three days ago
I tried to install Ericsson Mobile Phone Software Suite for my R520 phone.
This claims to permit syncing the phone with Outlook and adds Messaging
items to Outlook. But Install Shield locked up on exit, the add-ons failed
to work properly, and Add/Remove crashed again when I tried to uninstall.

Used System Restore to recover and then deleted the Ericsson files but maybe
Outlook got messed up in the process?

I don't understand what you mean by problem 2.
In IMO, the Outlook Address Book should say that. You are using the Windows
Address Book engine, not Outlook.

Apologies Russ. You are right, 'Problem (2)' is not a problem at all. I'd
compared the behaviour of Outlook on my main laptop (XP) with an older
machine (W2k) that I keep for experimental work. Completely forgot that a
few weeks ago I'd switched the latter to 'Corporate or Workgroup' to see
if changing from IMO to CW would mess up anything if I were to make the
change on the main laptop.

Thanks for the help - and sorry to waste your time.

It's not a waste of time. One could make an entire career out of the
straightening out the colossal confusion caused by Outlook's using two
different modes in 98/2000.
