Office 2000 vs Office XP

Danny Sanders

I am looking for some information detailing the differences in Office 2000
and Office XP. I have seen this article:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/evaluation/indepth/Compare.doc but it does
not go into enough detail. I read that you can create files in Office XP and
there are ways to protect the file from editing. Is this possible with
Office XP? What about Office 2000? We are mainly interested in producing
some training videos in power point that can't later be edited by anyone
other than the video creator.
I am looking for articles that detail the "security" improvements over
Office 2000.

Thanks
DDS

Hi Danny,

Powerpoint 2002 was the first version that has any
security on the presentations. You may want to check
with the folks in the Powerpoint newsgroup for more
information on the built in and 3rd party solutions.

There is a powerpoint 2002 feature guide at
http://microsoft.com/office/powerpoint/evaluation/guide.asp

Hi Danny,

Thank you for the posting. As you indicated you want to know ways to
protect the file from editing with Office XP?

Several of the Office XP programs give users the ability to protect file
content by setting a password. You can configure a policy setting that
disables this feature by turning off the command bar buttons and menu bar
items that are used to set passwords in Access, Excel, and Word.

In Word 2002, PowerPoint 2002, and Excel 2002, users can still set
passwords for a file by using the Save As command (File menu).
1. Click Save As on the File menu, and then, in the Save As dialog box,
clicking the Tools menu and then clicking Security Options.
2. The Security tab is displayed and includes two password options that
allow users to set a password for the file: "Password to open" and
"Password to modify".

For more information and suggestion on Password Protection in Office XP,
please refer to this knowledge base article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=309312

In addition, you can use encryption in Office XP. Earlier versions of
Microsoft Office do not encrypt file properties. Office XP encrypts file
properties by using supported algorithms.

How to Encrypt an Office Document
1. Open the document, and then click Options on the Tools menu.
2. Click the Security tab, and then click Advanced.
3. Select an encryption type, and then click OK.
4. Type a password in the "Password to open" box, and then click OK.
5. Type your password again in the Confirm Password dialog box, and then
click OK.
NOTE: The document will <not> be encrypted until you protect the document
with a password.

For more information and suggestion on Encryption in Office XP, please
refer to this knlwoledge base article:

Hope the above information and suggestion helps and answers your question.
If anything is unclear, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Cherry Qian
