Office 2000 / XP Prof SP2 - application must be installed to run e

S

Simone

I have been happily running Office 2000 on XP Professional SP2 but suddenly,
when trying to access any Office program, I get the following message:

This application must be installed to run. Please run Setup from the
location where you originally installed the application.

I have completely removed Office 2000 and reinstalled several times with no
change to the message. I have reviewed the Microsoft site and discussion
groups, so have tried downloading a new installer and editing the Registry to
check for keys left over from a Works install (long shot - there were none -
to my knowledge Works has never been installed on this PC!).

I am still getting the error message - is there anything else anyone can
suggest?

Thanks

I found that I could not solve this problem by renaming my profil
directory, which includes my user registry settings. However I di
observe that it worked fine for other logins on my computer. Therefor
I concluded it was related to the account's SID, which must be recorde
somewhere. It has ramifications for file ownership, but here is how
changed my SID and got office working again.

I managed to work around this as follows:

- Log out.
- Log into some other account with admin priveleges.
- Rename the account's profile (under Documents and Settings) t
something else.
- Create a new account on the domain controller.
- Log in as the new account.
- Log out and back into the Admin account.
- Rename your original profile directory to take the place of th
directory created for the new account.

This leaves you with a different login name, although you can fix thi
too by renaming your old login directory on the domain controller
