Office 2000 / XP/ Windows Installer

S

Stephen Couchman

When running Word 2000 and other Office 2000 applications
on XP, error 1706 appears for non-admin users. The apps
start up the Windows Installer, which looks for the
installation CD. The Office 2000 apps and all available
fixes have been applied to the apps and XP.

Is there a fix available for this ? (from similar postings
for problems with Office XP and Windows 2000, it looks
like an XP Windows Installer fix is needed)

Thanks -- Stephen

Hi Stephen,

Error 1706 is a generic installer error. We need to know the exact
error message in order to help determine the exact cause.

Without the full error message here are a couple KB article to take a
look at:

Beth,

Thanks for the reply. I have been looking for a solution
to this for a couple of weeks now. Of course, I found one
after posting this note:

The suggestion in KB article 313982 helped.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;313982

After adding the registry dword:

To resolve this problem, either set the AllowLockdownMedia
Windows Installer policy setting or make the user an
administrator before they run Outlook for the first time.
To set the AllowLockdownMedia policy setting, add an
AllowLockdownMedia DWORD value to the following registry
key and set its value data to 1.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Inst
aller

Follow these steps, and then quit Registry Editor:
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Inst
aller

On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
Type AllowLockdownMedia, and then press ENTER.
On the Edit menu, click Modify.
Type 1, and then click OK.

I started Word for each of the users. It found the
install disk, and now seems to be happy, i.e. the
installer is no longer started when the non-admin users
start up Word or IE.
