Office 2001-Excel 9 corrupting AppleTalk, Why?

A few weeks ago I installed Office 2001 on my OS 9.2.2 Beige G3. Using
it caused my system and other apps to become very unstable (and
causeing problems with my Helix database software). I installed the
latest update (10/04)...that helped a little but I discovered Excel
seems to have a problem (or is causing one) with AppleTalk.

1. If I open Excel 9, then Helix 5.2, Helix will freeze (understand,
Helix is one of the stable apps EVER on the Mac!)...apparently at the
point Helix checks the network for copies with the same serial #...this
got me thinking it was an Excel/AppleTalk issue.

2. If I open Excel 9, turn off AppleTalk, then open Helix 5.2, Helix
will spring open with no problems.

3. If I turn off AppleTalk, open Excel 9, then try to turn AppleTalk
back on the Finder hangs....forcing you to restart.

My Beige G3 has a SCSI drive (1 partition) and a big IDE drive (3
partitions), I was able to have the same thing happen when booting OS 9
off either drive (and the system on the IDE is bare bones).

Why does Excel 9 corrupt AppleTalk? Is there a fix?

Also, is MicroSoft still supporting Mac users? You can't even get
support on their web site. It says you need a .Net Passport to contact
support but you go to get an account and are told that page doesn't
work! Try opening other pages in the Mac support area WITH MICROSOFT
EXPLORER and the browser freezes up with a spinning cursor.

Anyway, why can't Mac users get tech support?

After years of avoiding MicroSoft (I still use Word 5.1a circa '92) I
decide to try them again....and learn again why I hate their fat
incompatible bloatware.
