Office 2001 for Mac help needed!

Laura.M.Simon

As an undergrad, I received a copy of Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac and
it is installed on my iMac that I used there. However, I just bought a
new MacBook for graduate school and need to install Office on that
computer now, but when I put the disk in and double click on install it
wont work. All of the icons have an x on them and I believe it says it
"This application cannot run on this system" or something to that
effect. HELP! I need Office asap since classes start this week!
Thank you
Laura

Hi Laura -

Your best bet is to hie thee to the university bookstore & get the upgrade
to Office 2004 - especially if it's the Student/Teacher Edition as the
package is extremely affordable right now.

Your problem is that 2001 is written for Mac OS 9.x. In order to run it on
an OS X system you need to have Classic/OS 9 installed. The new unit is most
certainly running OS X 10.4.x which doesn't include OS 9 - therefore, Office
2001 won't run unless you _also_ install OS 9.2.2 (and if your referring to
one of the Intel MacBooks you can't even do that.)

As a more immediate 'band-aid' you can go to:

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx?pid=download&location=/mac/downl
oad/office2004/office2004.xml&secid=4&ssid=1&flgnosysreq=True

and download the Office 2004 Test Drive (which is a fully operational 30-day
trial version). Frankly, I'm surprised it isn't already on the MacBook. If
you go this route, make sure to follow the appropriate procedure for
*Removing* it BEFORE installing the live package.

Bob:
Thanks for your help! The sales associate asked if I needed to buy
office, but I said no thinking I could just use the 2001 version. I
guess I was very wrong!! Thanks for the info about the 30-day trial.
If I cant get the actual software before classes, I'll definiely
check-out the trial!
I had printshop for mac and adobe photo for the iMac...I wasn't able to
install them either. Is this the same situation?
Thanks again!

Is this the same situation?

In all probability, yes. If the versions were purchased to run on a Mac
under OS 9 or earlier then that is the OS they need. If Classic/OS 9.2.2 is
supported by the model & version of OS X you're running you can go that
route. However, you may find that the programs run slowly & there may be
other quirks to deal with.

FWIW, I strongly recommend upgrading to the OS X compatible versions
wherever possible. Note that *upgrading* as a licensed user of the software
is usually not prohibitive in terms of cost. You do *not* have to repurchase
most software if you are going from one version to another.

Reminder: If you do the Test Drive make sure you uninstall it using the
Remove Office Utility that comes with it - don't just Trash the folder -
*before* you install the full version. Otherwise the gotcha gremlins will
take over your Office docs until you uninstall *both* then reinstall the
live version... A royal PITA :)
