Office 2001

In trying to download the Office 2001 combo update it opens in 9.2, then I
get a message that "The default location required for this install could not
be found. This install will be cancelled." What does this really mean? If i
wanted to uninstall Office 2001 and reinstall and then reinstall the various
updates piecemeal- what would happen to my email account
information, messages and address book? Would this all be deleted and
have to be reinstalled from scratch? I'm running 10.3.3 on a G4. The
components of Office 2001 seem to be version 10.4 or 10.5 but the initial
install is version 10.0 Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This seems a bit confusing. Are you really trying to update Office:2001 (aka
Office 9) or is it Office v.X (which is Office 10)?

If you are trying to update Office v.X with the Office:2001 9.0.4 combo
update, as it seems you are, it can't work. To update Office v.X, you have
to download the 10.1.2, 10.1.4 and 10.1.5. But it seems these have already
been applied, if I read you well. If this is the case, there is nothing else
you can update for now.

To see exactly which version you're up to, "Get the Info" of the "Microsoft
Component Plugin" that you can find in your "Office" folder.

If I'm wrong, don't hesitate and post back...

Are you using Office 2001 in Classic in OS X? You don't make it clear. (If
you're using Office v. X, this is not the right updater for you.)

If so, which version of OS X? The correct location of your Microsoft User
Data folder changed in OS 10.2 (and 10.3). But that doesn't seem to be the
problem described here. I don't think that the default location for
installing the Office apps themselves changed between OS 9 and OS X even.
They should be here:

[Startup Disk]/Applications (Mac OS9)/Microsoft Office 2001/

It may be important that the installation be on your startup disk. Do you
use a different partition or drive for OS 9 than for OS X? If so, boot into
OS 9 and try the update there.

At this point, you need to let us know more details of your Office version,
your OS versions, and which you're booted in.
