Office 2002 freezes using any drop-down menu

All of a sudden (isn't this always the case), any Office 2002
application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) freezes whenever you click on
the drop-down arrow from a menu window. e.g., file|open -- whenever
you then click on the drop-down to try to nagigage to another folder
it freezes; insert|picture|from file...same thing; etc., etc.

Have tried detect and repair -- no success.
Have turned off Norton -- no success.

Drop downs work, btw, in safe mode.

Phew! totally frustrating.

Would love some help!! TIA
