Office 2003 & 2007 on same machine

Hello. I have successfully installed 2k3 & 2k7 on the same machine. That was
pretty straightforward, just had to roll back a few DLLs to keep 2003
working.

My challenge at this point is the Compatability Pack. When I run the pack it
acts as though it has successfully installed whatever it needs, but I cannot
open DOCX or XLSX (etc) files in 2003.

Any ideas? I can just manually copy files out of the CAB if necessary.

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Jim

Hi Jim,

Ordinarily you shouldn't need to modify the DLL file choices to have Office 2003 and 2007 to work together, just a couple of
registry tweaks perhaps

You may want to run a repair of Office (diagnostics in Office 2007) to see if that makes a difference.

Bob, thanks for the link, that is helpful.

The second part of my question about opening 2007 files in 2003 stands,
however. Any ideas of how to get the compatibility pack to work? Actually I
seem to be able to open DOCX files in Word 2003, but XLSX files in Excel are
still a no-go.

Thanks again for your expertise!

One other issue that's cropped up. It now appears that Excel is confused by
spaces in file/pathnames. For example, if I open
C:\documents and settings\administrator\desktop\test one.xls
I get a series of popups saying
File c:\documents.xls not found [OK]
File and.xls not found [OK]
File settings\administrator\desktop\test.xls not found [OK]
File one.xls not found [OK]

After clicking "OK" through all of those, the document loads just fine. More
of an annoyance than anything. Thoughts? Ideas?

Also - if I open a spreadsheet embedded in a 2003 PPT, it opens with Excel
2007, even though if I click through the path to get there and open it, then
after the above errors it opens fine in 2003.

Bah. Humbug. :p

Advice gratefully welcomed. :)

Hi Jaime,

The file type registration may be broken for Excel.

Try using Start=>Run
Excel.exe /regserver
and see if that helps. You may need to delete the .xls FileType association first in Windows Explorer=>Tools=>Folder Options

Thanks, Bob. Actually I put in the 2003 CD and selected "Repair
Installation." Now everything is ducky. I appreciate your time, sir.
