office 2003 accessing documents on NT4 server

We are having problems accessing Word and Excel documents with Office 2003 on
an NT 4 server. The Office installation is on Win XP Pro machines.

Word gives an "Insufficient Memory" error when I try to browse to the server
when opening documents.

Excel doesn't give any error, it simply doesn't do anything.

The problem only happens in Office 2003. There are no
problems with Office 97, 2000, or XP. The server is WinNT 4, with all SP6.

This is a huge problem for us, because all the documents on this NT4 server
are shared and updated frequently by all users, so there is not the option to
work on files locally and upload to the server all the time.
