Office 2003 Administrative Install SP1 problems

I am attempting to put SP1 into an administrative install
of Office 2003. Everything seems to go OK. When I
install Office all of the applications still report back
as having file versions prior to SP1. However the base
MSOFFICE install version reports back at a SP1 version
number. If you attempt to apply SP1 to a machine it will
tell you that it is already installed. I have attempted
to start with a clean installation point many times with
the same results. Any ideas?

Keep in mind that patching an Administrative install is different than
patching a regular Office install. An administrative install does not run
office. It is merely a point for others to install from. To patch it you
must use the appropriate msiexec line.

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan,

Thanks for the advice. I am using the proper switches. (I have worked
quite extensively with administrative patches of Office 2000). When I
applied the updates it puts all of the updated files in the PFILES directory,
modifies the MSI and the CAB files remained untouched. When I attempt to
install from this install point the actual program files are at a Pre-SP1
version, while Office itself is at SP1. It also will not allow me to
manually update to SP1 either. It says it is already installed. Is the
Administrative install supposed to read from the PFILES directory? Are the
CAB’s supposed to be updated?

Thanks…

So you have mentioned that you are using Office 2000 and trying to get it to
SP1 level. I think this is the problem. We didn't actually release SP1 for
Office 2000. We released SR-1 which is different. I believe you should try
creating an admin point from the SR-1 release. If you are using an Admin
SR-1 patch could you point me to the location you have downloaded from and I
will try and repro your situation. Also, please let me know what sku of
office you are installing (Pro, Std, etc).

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan,

I only reason I mentioned Office 2000, was to reference the fact that I have
worked with the administrative update process in the past and know how it
works. I am trying to install.

This project has nothing to do with Office 2000. The GUID of the software
is 90120409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9.

Okay...so it looks like you have Office 2003 Standard Edition...is this a
corporate install? Admin points are not supported in the retail skus for
this product. If it is a corporate install please include any failure logs
you get when trying to patch the admin point.

The patching command line used should be something along these lines...
msiexec /p <patch location MAINSP1FF.msp> /a <Install location\STD11.MSI">
/L*V "<log file>" /qr

where the /qr is optional (but does it with reduced UI).

Hope this helps...
Thanks,
Ryan
