Office 2003 all updates failed - SP2 Currently is in Effect

P

PT

Today I ran the Windows Update's batch of security updates for Windows XP
and Office 2003.

All the Windows XP updates installed without problems.
Each of the 8 Office 2003 updates below failed.
I currently have (per Help | About) Office SP2 in effect

Failures:
PowerPoint KB923091
Office 2003 KB924424
Excel KB923088
Office 2003 KB923272
Word KB923094
Office 2003 KB923097
Outlook Junk Mail Filter KB923095
Publisher 2003 KB894542

Is this easily fixable?

If I forget about it, what am I risking?

How to troubleshoot failures updating your Office installation from the Office Update
Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304498

If you disable the Ose.exe file, Microsoft Office updates do not install when you use
Microsoft Windows Server Update Services or the Microsoft Update Web site to deploy
software updates and hotfixes to computers in the organization
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=903774

Note, if Windows Live Safety Center Registry Clean-up has been used, then you need to
restore the registry keys that were deleted in the clean-up.

Use control panel "Folder Options", tab "View", to enable "Show hidden files and
folders"
Close all Internet Explorer windows.
Use Windows Explorer to navigate to folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Windows Live Safety Center\BackUp\
and double-click the .reg file previously created by the Microsoft Safety registry
cleanup.

This wasn't much help. I'm trying to update Office 2003 SP2 on a home
desktop running WinXP Home SP2.

The installation proceeds, with each marked as having "failed". No
explanations, error codes or help links.

Assuming I can't find the problem, and further assuming I ignore the
failures, and forget about updating, what am I risking?

Have you tried manually downloading the updates and installing?
Critical updates are there for a reason. You'll need to read the KB regarding what
you're risking.

I had exactly the same problem as you. (See my post on 10-9-2006.)

Well, I solved the problem myself by uninstalling and then re-installing
Office 2003. This turned out easier than I thought it would be.

I first used control panel to remove Office 2003 and did a fresh
installation of Office from the copy of install disk I have on my hard drive.
(I could have used the original disk, but chose to use the copy so future
updates will not require me to mount the disk.)

I then ran Windows update which updated Office with SP 2. After rebooting,
I ran it again and it installed the updates perfectly.

I then rebooted again, put shortcuts for Outlook, Word and Excel on my
desktop, and found that everything was perfect. My calendar, task list, and
prior file references were in place for all programs.

I recommend this procedure and it turned out to be the simplest and least
time consuming in the long run. (I have cable internet so download time is
minimal.)

Hope this helps.

Are you a MS employee? You're answers to all of these post regarding
KB923088 seem a bit out of the can. Can you actually fix this problem? What
is it about these particular updates and computers that make the installation
fail? DO YOU KNOW?

No I am not a MS employee.
There are many reasons why updates fail on particular computers, but without further
details from the OPs, you can only give a starting point.
A lot of office updates require the original source, and if not provided they fail.
If the computer has a faulty installation of office, the updates will also fail.
If the computer has viruses/malware then the installation will fail.
If the relevant services are turned off, the installation will fail.
Office updates have been known to fail when you run Windows Live Safety Centre as
that removes certain registry keys needed by office.
If an installation of office has been made via two separate installations disks, for
example Office Standard and Office Professional or standalone versions installed at
different times, there could be problems when the updates look for various installer
files and spits the dummy when it can't find the right .cab.
Firewalls, antivirus programs etc can also cause failure.

I downloaded the full file updates manually and they still required the original
source. Perhaps if the Office CD is in the installation drive, the updates may
proceed in some cases.

A majority of the problems seems to be fixed with a reinstall of office or a repair
of office.

If an OP wants professional help, they are free to speak to MS regarding their
problems.

I'm no tech whatsoever, but while trying to battle the failed updates
for Microsoft Office 2003, I realized that I never purchased Microsoft
Office 2003 in the first place. I removed Microsoft Office 2003 from my
add and remove programs, along with the Excel Viewer 2003 and now I
don't get the annoying failed updates.

I can only guess that there was no patch to avoid these automatic
updates if you didn't purchase the program and the trial version ran
out. At any rate, I hope this helps someone who might be frugal like me,
who thinks that the good old Microsoft Works Word Processor is good
enough.
