Office 2003 Applications hanging when using File>Open or File >Sav

I am experiencing a problem opening or saving documents in Microsoft office.
I did some research and found the following

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

I don't see this update listed in my control panel in Add remove Programs
with the Show updates box checked.

I have renamed the program to .old
C:\WINDOWS\system32\verclsid.exe.old

I do not see the process running in the task manager.

I also checked my registry setting

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell
Extensions\Cached{A4DF5659-0801-4A60-9607-1C48695EFDA9}
{000214E6-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} 0x401

Has a DWORD VALUE of 1

However any MS office application hangs for more than 5 minutes. Then you
can browse the directory tree, or it immediately hangs and will not recover.

I am running Win XP with all the latest updates excluding IE7, MS Office
2003. I checked Adobe, Winzip and notepad the File>Open and File> Save are
functioning correctly.

Hi, jb,

Can you pinpoint when the problem started? Has it always happened with
Office 2003? What version of Office 2003 do you have? Have you tried to
re-install or uninstall / re-install the Office software to repair the
installation?

The issue appeared to have started after a mass of Windows Updates. I am an
IT admin and I use Norton Ghost for several systems. I generally run updates
after the initial image then install my software run updates and configure
user profile. I noticed the issue when configuring the user profile

I did try the "Repair" option for Office as soon as I noticed the issue when
that failed to correct the problem I uninstalled office and reinstalled.
Unfortunately it did not correct the problem.

The only thing that really sticks out in my mind is I installed MS Office
Communicatoe 2007 Beta 3. I uninstalled at the users request as there are
only a few people using it here. It seems my troubles started shortly after.

My laptop is identical it has the same exact updates and the same exact copy
of MS office running. Office 2003 SP2. I don't have the issue. The only
difference between my machine and the users machine are a couple of third
party applications. I haven't uninstalled communicator ( don't intend to now
either :) )

Any help would be appreciated - thanks for your reply Susan

Try garfield-n-odie's advice that followed--he's usually spot on. Please
post back if that does the trick or not.

Thanks for the reply - I did think of this one I even disconnected network
drives that were available. I ended up running updates for every adobe
program the user had installed after the updates completed and I rebooted the
symptoms disappeared.
