office 2003 basic edition updates

When Word crashes I get a message, "updates are available"
When I scan for updates I get a message "can not scan for updates"
with several possibilities as to why. The solutions either do not apply or
do not work. Dell says it is a MS problem because it is an OEM version.
Does this mean that it is a worthless version?
