Office 2003 cannot install/uninstall/update

ms

I get the following message when I try to uninstall/reinstall/update Office
2003 professional. I have read article 814833 on this subject and restoring
windows to a previous checkpoint is not an option.

"This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package
exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to
verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."

I realize that one of the previous patches was either not installed properly
or has been compromised. How can I uninstall/delete this package so I can
reinstall using my original CDs and apply the existing SP1 and hot fixes.

Any help is sincerely appreciated.

Hi, joecousins,

Have you tried to reapply the patches, per the article?

RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, reapply the patches that are missing. If the
patch location is a network or media share that is available, you may be
able to locate and to apply the patch from there. You can also install the
latest Service Pack patch for the application because the latest service
pack contains the previous QFEs. The cumulative patch applies the missing
patches to the application and makes the individual missing patches
obsolete.

If that doesn't work, try this:

run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:

290301 - Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301&Product=offxp

Use it to remove entries from Windows Installer for Office. The Windows
Installer is very confused right now, so let's start clean.

Then re-install Office from your original CD.

Then re-install the patches.

That may help matters.
