Hi everyone,

I need to check what office 2003 Service Pack our network users got on their
workstation. What free tool is available for me to do that and create a
report of our of date system?

Also what application allow me to deploy office update from the server
rather than go to each and every single workstation?

Thanks

For checking what versions of Office or their patch status, try Belarc
advisor. You can also use the free Microsoft tool as well to check your
inventory.

Hi Milly,

Thank you very much for your reply! What free tool is available from
Microsoft? I know we can use WSUS to update office service pack, but can it
views all the patch status for all workstations? I only want to view all the
office 2003 patch status on all workstations on our domain, but not to update
them yet.

Thanks

HI,

Also, is anyone knows what is SMS 2003? How is it different from WSUS? Do
we have to purchase SMS 2003? Can I achieve my goal using SMS 2003, which is
only viewing office patch status on all the workstations on our domain? It
will be nice if there is some report function.

Thanks

SMS = Systems Management Server.

It is a comprehensive, expensive, and complicated software application
design to assist enterprises in centralized management of systems.

For more information, see http://www.microsoft.com/sms

It is different from WSUS in that WSUS has a very defined focus -- to make
available operating system and application updates for Microsoft products,
as approved by a centralized administrator, to allow clients to be updated.

You do not have to purchase SMS2003 to use WSUS. WSUS is free. SMS2003 is
quite expensive. SMS2003 would be overkill to achieve your stated goal of
"viewing office patch status on all the workstations in your domain", but it
would allow you do that.

A simple explanation - WSUS is Pull technoogy, SMS is Push technology.
