office 2003 - creating a new document from a template

Is there a way to create a new office document using the templates
dialog without having to select it from the word "new document" pane?

With Office 2000 I could select New Office Document from the Start menu
or I could get a templates dialog when I select file|new from the Word
menu.

so, is there an app or shortcut I could use to do this.

That is an example of one of many problems I feel MS introduced into
Office 2003. In an apparent effort to "dumb down" the interface, they
made it more complex for previous power users. I uninstalled Office
2003 and reinstalled Office 2000.
