Office 2003 Default Styel/Format for Inserted Fields

Hi,

I am having a problem with a word document. Every time I insert a
cross reference field it uses the default format of the page. I need
to be able to set a default format for it to use.

What is also puzzling is that I am inserting the cross reference as a
Hyperlink, yet it still shows up as the default format.

Any help is appreciated,
