Office 2003 Documents Changing to Read Only

J

Jason H.

I've had a few users complaining about Office 2003 documents (Word & Excel thus far) becoming "Read-Only" whilst working on them. Once this happens, they'll go to File > Save and the "Save As" dialog box will come up instead of the "Save" dialog box. (Office 2003 & Windows XP)

I've stumbled on another query similar to this in the microsoft.public.word.docmanagement newsgroup but the question had yet to be answered. There was also a post in the microsoft.public.word.newusers newsgroup but it was stated that a 3rd-party add-in or macro was the culprit...neither of which we're dealing with here. Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

Hi Jason,

Does the issue only occur with the documents on the network shared folder, or it also occurs when the user works with the files on the
local hard disk? I understand that the operating system is Windows XP. Follow the steps below to see if it works.

#1 Disable the Webclient service
=================
1. Click Start > Run > type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) and then press Enter.
2. Double click the service "WebClient".
3. Click on the tab "General "; please change the "Startup Type" from "Automatic" to "Disable". Click Apply to apply the settings. Click
OK.

Test the issue. If the issue persists, go to next step.

#2 Temp disable the AntiVirus (McAfee, Norton) program on the clients. Keep test the issue again.

#3 disable offline files
=============
Open My Computer, click the Tools menu > Folder Options > in the Offline Files tab, uncheck 'enable offline files'

Test the issue again. If it doesn't work, go to next step.

#4 Re-initialize the local CSC folder
==========================
1. Click Start, type: CMD and then right click on the CMD in the list and then select Run as Administrator.
2. In the command prompt, please run the following command:

REG ADD "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC\Parameters" /v FormatDatabase /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

Note: The actual value of the registry key is ignored. This registry change requires a restart. When the computer is restarting, the shell
will reinitialize the CSC cache and then delete the registry key if the registry entry exists

3. Restart the machine.
4. Open an Office document on the shared folder and try to edit it. Does it still become Read-only?

#5 disable the windows desktop search and test the issue again.
=========================
Have you installed the Windows Desktop Search: Add-in for Files on Microsoft Networks? If so, remove it and test the issue again.

For detail information about the Windows Desktop Search: Add-in for Files on Microsoft Networks, refer to the KB article below.

Emily,

I'm still awaiting feedback. Some of the options aren't applicable to us
and some of them I was hesitant to start with. I am, however, starting with
disabling WDS as that was one common component between the individuals that
were experiencing this problem. That said, I CERTAINLY appreciate your
detailed response! I'll be sure and post back as to what I find.

Thanks again!

Okay, removing Windows Desktop Search seems to have worked. I've finally
gotten some feedback from one of my users and they said they haven't
experienced the problem since I removed the application. Do you know why
that is?

Thanks again for your help, Emily! Have a great day!

Hi Jason,

Nice to hear that it works fine now.

When you say 'removing Windows Desktop Search', do you refer to the WDS itself, or the addin for WDS which I listed in #5 in my first
reply?

According to current situation, the issue might be caused that the indexing in the WDS sometimes may access the file on network driver
when you try to open the file in Office 2003. And then Office 2003 may incorrectly think that the file was accessed by others.

Please don't reinstlall the Windows Desktop Search to prevent such an issue recuring.

If anything is unclear or if you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Have a happy weekend!

Emily, I removed it completely. This particular user never used it anyway.
I had installed that add-in so, in regards to the other user that was also
complaining of these types of errors, I may just try and remove the add-in
first and then go from there. Thanks again!
