Hi Jason,
Does the issue only occur with the documents on the network shared folder, or it also occurs when the user works with the files on the
local hard disk? I understand that the operating system is Windows XP. Follow the steps below to see if it works.
#1 Disable the Webclient service
=================
1. Click Start > Run > type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) and then press Enter.
2. Double click the service "WebClient".
3. Click on the tab "General "; please change the "Startup Type" from "Automatic" to "Disable". Click Apply to apply the settings. Click
OK.
Test the issue. If the issue persists, go to next step.
#2 Temp disable the AntiVirus (McAfee, Norton) program on the clients. Keep test the issue again.
#3 disable offline files
=============
Open My Computer, click the Tools menu > Folder Options > in the Offline Files tab, uncheck 'enable offline files'
Test the issue again. If it doesn't work, go to next step.
#4 Re-initialize the local CSC folder
==========================
1. Click Start, type: CMD and then right click on the CMD in the list and then select Run as Administrator.
2. In the command prompt, please run the following command:
REG ADD "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CSC\Parameters" /v FormatDatabase /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
Note: The actual value of the registry key is ignored. This registry change requires a restart. When the computer is restarting, the shell
will reinitialize the CSC cache and then delete the registry key if the registry entry exists
3. Restart the machine.
4. Open an Office document on the shared folder and try to edit it. Does it still become Read-only?
#5 disable the windows desktop search and test the issue again.
=========================
Have you installed the Windows Desktop Search: Add-in for Files on Microsoft Networks? If so, remove it and test the issue again.

I've had a few users complaining about Office 2003 documents (Word & Excel thus far) becoming "Read-Only" whilst working on them.
Once this happens, they'll go to File > Save and the "Save As" dialog box will come up instead of the "Save" dialog box. (Office 2003 &
Windows XP)
I've stumbled on another query similar to this in the microsoft.public.word.docmanagement newsgroup but the question had yet to be
answered. There was also a post in the microsoft.public.word.newusers newsgroup but it was stated that a 3rd-party add-in or macro
was the culprit...neither of which we're dealing with here. Any other thoughts?
