I am running Office 2003 in a High School environment. All user computers
are Windows XP Pro and are part of a server 2003 Domain. I have a problem
with my student accounts not being able to save or open files in Word
(probably any office app) The problem is really that when the user tries to
open Word, Office tries to install something. Students do not have
permission to install programs on local computers. I get an error 1324
invalid character in 'Application Data'. This happens twice then lets the
student into Word but as soon as they try to open or save a file there is a
non-recoverable error that shuts down word then restarts it. The major
problem with this is that student's paper is deleted in the process.
Students are members of the 'Domain Users' group and 'Students' group, and
are using DFS to redirect the Application Data, Desktop, My Documents, and
Start Menu folders. The Desktop folder is redirected to a common folder and
students can not change anything in this folder. Application Data, My
Documents and Start Menu folders are redirected to the students profile
folder on the server where they have full control of everything in the
folder. If I make a student a member of 'Domain Admins' then everything
works fine. When I take them out of the 'Domain Admins' group the old
behavior returns, although Word does not try to install any more.
The microsoft report says to update office with service pack 2. I have done
this to 1 computer and this did not solve the problem. Any help would be
Greatly Appreciated!
I am also having problems updating Office since I slip-streamed service pack
1 into the install CD and installed it from the network to all machines. Now
I can not apply the update to the machine I must go back and update the
install point and reinstall on all machines again. If there is a way around
this I would love to know about that as well! The one machine I did change I
uninstalled Office and reinstalled office from the install CD not the network
install so I could apply the update.
Thanks in advance,
