Office 2003 Error Message

When I start up Office 2003, I get a consistent error message in all apps
of:
eReference Embedding
unknown application version

Nest problem: in word only, I cannon get rid of the startup task pane.
Tricks in help do not work, deleting normal.dot and restarting does not
work.

All help appreciated
