Office 2003-Excel

When I was using Office 2000-Excel, it was a very simple procedure to make a
calculation of e.g.: -
(L8+L9)-E9=
Now when I want to make this simple calculation I select Sum, but when I try
to click on the appropriate cell, say L8, instead of this being entered as
before I get a Ping and nothing happens.

What am I doing wrong? How can I enter this simple calculation?

Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

PS Microsoft had a good product in Office 200, they had to mess it up!

Hi
just enter
=L8+L9-E9

no need for SUM in this case

Which does the job, but does not explain the "ping" when trying the SUM
Function.

I assume you are selecting the AutoSum button on the toolbar.

Do you get =SUM() in cell with a tooltip of =SUM(number1,[number2],...) ?

You click on a cell and get a "ping" noise but no cell entry between the ()?

I cannot replicate this behavior in my versions of Excel 2002 or 2003.

Hi ......... annonymous@discussions.....,
I expect the ping indicates you are still editing
a different cell. You might want to use Enter or Esc to
get out of Edit.

I have Excel 2000 and I can't figure out what you are trying
to say that you could do with SUM in Excel 2000. I can't
figure what cell (what row) you are trying to enter the formula
into. Basically I would probably use OFFSET as in
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/insrtrow.htm#offset
for something like a running total or bank balance. But your
formula looks similar but can't be that.

What Frank Kabel suggested, does not give any results!

For Gordon Dibben:

Col. L = Total, Col.E = Outgoings, Col.I = Incomings

I want to add an item in Col.E between existing lines 8 and 9 by creating a
new line.

To correct all the entries in Col.L (which could be up to 50 lines) I do it
by Copy and Paste the calculation in a topmost correct cell.

I select the newly created cell in Col. I and click on Fx, below Toolbar,
that brings out the Calculating Dialog Box.
I select Sum and to make the entries in the space provided by clicking on
cells I try to make the entry (L8+L9)-E9, but each time I click on a cell I
just get a "Ping" noise and nothing else.

I did that with Office 2000 by making the entries just below the Toolbar,
with excellent results, for this and much more complicated calculations, but
Office 2003 cannot make even the simplest one!

What am I doing wrong and how do make the calculation? Thank you.

Can't follow what you are doing.

The first mistake you are making is using the SUM Function from the Fx drop
down.

You cannot enter =SUM(L8+L9)-E9 by clicking on cells in the SUM Function
dialog. Adding the + and - signs will error out.

Clicking on cells should return =SUM(L8,L9,E9) which is not what you want.

Just manually enter =L8+L9-E9 as Frank suggested. Note the = sign.

If you get no results, perhaps your entries are Text and not Numbers.

In other words things don't work if the problem is not stated correctly:

the formula you want for subtotals (running balance) is something like:
L9: =OFFSET(L9,-1,0),+I9-F9
so there is not reference to L8 directly making it possible to
insert and delete rows. Formula is equiv. to L9: =L8+I9-F9

which bears little resemblance to your original (L8+L9)-E9
unless you realize that L9 is a typo and you wanted I9 as
you restated for Gordon.

Frank can only answer based on what you told him. The error might
have been more apparent had you included where the formula was
to go. So as I stated earlier in the thread, your formula was very
questionable.

Everything is described on my webpage including why you need to
use OFFSET in your formulas so you can insert and delete rows
as well as macros to insert rows between other rows while
maintaining formulas.
