Office 2003 fax

I can no longer send or receive faxes from my computer since 2008. I have
windows xp professional service pack 2 w/ office 2003. I haven't changed any
settings...there is no dial tone when it goes to send. What can I do to get
this to work again? I checked my settings and ran some troubleshooting, but
still can't figure it out.

It's probably not an Office problem but....

....are you sure your computer is plugged into a working phone line?
What settings did you check and what troubleshooting did you run?

yes, phone is connected to dsl to wall, thus i am able to communicate with
you. like i said, it was working, and now there is not a dial tone, all the
settings are correct, i uninstall/install fax...this issue might be the
modem? it shows no problems with this modem...no other ones shown to select.
would an upgrade from ms to service pack 2 cause any issues? i am trying to
cut to the chase cuz the basic troublshooting has been done, but i am a bit
frustrated when it was working fine.

I also ran an operating system check with Dell to determine if anything has
been corrupt...no disc or repair was required. I was wondering if the
digital phone line would affect this, but I had high speed and was able to
fax prior to changing to dsl.
