Office 2003 hangs on opening documents

Hello everyone,

I have a strange problem with office 2003 and have no idea how to resolve it.

I am running Windows XP with all the latest updates and Office 2003 also
with all the latest updates.

If I open MS Word and then go to File > Open and open an existing document
it works fine. The document opens almost instantly.

However if I double click on an existing document it takes between 2 – 3
minutes for the document to open. This is the case for all word, excel and
power point documents.

Any idea what I can do to prevent this from happening?

Many thanks,

Andy

Have you tried this DDE solution from an earlier posting?

If the problem is ONLY when you double-click on a file to open it. the
problem is likely due to DDE. It can be fixed by reinstalling, OR this
workaround.

Go to Control Panel, Folder Options, File Types, scroll down to and
select (DOC for Word files) or XLS (for Excel files), click Advanced,
select Open entry, click the edit Button.
Now uncheck "Use DDE" and then put your cursor in the Application box,
arrow all the way to the right and put in "%1" (include the quote
marks), IF there is /dde remove it. Then OK you way out. Things should
work quickly again.
