office 2003 - hangs on selecting files

Windows XP Pro - running Office 2003
When I go to either open or save a document screen and then go to select the
folder from the file menu the system hangs for about a minute or more. This
does not happen if I select a folder in the open file list, but only if I
click in the "look in" box to navigate to a different level. It hangs for
about a minute and then works fine and I can navigate. If I cancel and then
go back the same long delays.

Any ideas

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
