Office 2003 Installation Failed Error

Stumped

I am at a loss to solve this problem with Office 2003. Everything suggested
in this newsgroup has not worked so far.

I have Office 2003 installed on a Windows XP SP2 machine. When I put the CD
in the drive and started autorun.inf, I get an error "Installation Failed".
No more information. I even went so far to uninstall SP2 and reinstall the
original Windows XP , SP1a.

I have not tried uninstalling Office because I am concerned I cannot
reinstall and I need to use it daily.
