office 2003 - issues accessing word docs from network drives

Hi,
one of my clients have approx 10 machines on a small win2k domain. 3 of
the machines have office 2003, and the rest are still on office xp. The
o/s are a mixture of win2k and win xp. All o/s as well as all
applications are updated on a weekly basis. The machines using office
xp are fine and dandy, however, the machines running office 2003 appear
to freeze / take an eternity to open word docs from a network drive. If
I uninstall and use office xp, no probs, so it is an office 2003 issue.
I can acess and download files from the server with no problems, it is
very fast, it is just word freezing / stalling / having an afternoon
nap that is the problem. I know from looking at other groups (as well
as this one) that I am not the only one experiencing this problem, but
what I have not found is a solution. My clients (as well as me) are
pulling their hair out over this as it is so un-productive. Does anyone
have any idea's ?

yours desperatly,

Howie Hughes.

I think I have a related problem. I use the Offline Files feature to cache
network files on my laptop when not connected to the network. If I try to
open a word document directly from the cache, the program freezes - every
time! If I use explorer to take the file out of the cache and put it on the
client desktop, it opens no problem. So it is something in the way Word
interacts with the file it thinks is on the network when I'm offline. Any
help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am having the exact same problem as luke. I have a number of laptop users
who synchronise their documents using the Offline Files feature. When online
everything is great, but as soon as they go offline they cannot open word
documents without it freezing. The laptop doesn't lock up completely because
initially you can move the cursor - its as if it is searching for the network
instead of looking in the offline csc file store.

If anybody has any ideas it would be appreciated.

Regards,

Simon Grocott
