Office 2003 - locked and unusable

I have used Office 2003 on the same computer without problem for a couple of
years. Suddenly it is unusable - all the elements are locked and the vast
majority of buttons / options greyed-out. I have tried uninstal / reinstal
without success. The programme was activated ages ago. Has anyone any
ideas?! Thanks.
