Office 2003 Modification . .Doc Locked

My neighbor keeps getting this message in Word and
Excel, "This modification is not allowed because the
document is locked."

They are not on a network nor even on the internet to get
a virus. They have been able to use Office for the last 4
months. Suddenly tonight they are getting this message.
Does anyone know what caused it and how to get back to
normal. I have printed out the knowledge base answer and
eventhough it does not make sense to me, I am headed next
door to try. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Do your neighbor have a trial version of Office? If so, perhaps the
