office 2003 most menu items are grayed out

I am asking a question about my step daughters laptop using windows xp. all
of her office applications have most ot the menu items grayed out.

It sounds as if she may have been using a trial version which has expired.

That's good info. Has she activated the software? It goes into this "few
features" mode (can't remember the real word for it right now!) after so
many days or uses without activating. Try opening Word or another
application and choosing Help|Activate Product.

i get the message to activate but when I try it says that i have activated up
to the limit for the product key.

way that i can find out if it is a trial?
