Office 2003 not working so great on Vista

I have Office 2003 installed on my 32 bit Vista computer for over a year.
Lately--I don't know if it was a Window's update or an Office update--but
now, especially when I try to use Word it almost always stops responding.
It is extremely annoying to be in a hurry to get something done and have
Word start slow as molasses or stop responding when I try to close it down.
I have done two "repairs" from the Control Panel which were totally
ineffective. Is there something I can do to improve the performance of this
program on my Vista machine?

A bit hard to say; have you checked the sys Event Viewer to see if there are
any relevent err's?
Tried booting your PC into safe mode and seeing how word performs then?
Checked the MS Update history to see what was updated since it was last OK?
