Office 2003 / Office XP Shortcut Bar

I, like so many of the rest of you out there, was very disappointed when I
found out that there was no office shortcut bar (OSB) after my upgrade to
Office 2003. After looking through these newsgroups, searching the web, and
trying several alternative solutions (Windows built-in toolbar
functionality, jetToolBar), I decided that I needed to get back the Office
XP Shortcut Bar. After much searching and testing, I believe I've
discovered a way for the Office XP Shortcut Bar to work with Office 2003
without having to actually install the OSB via the Office XP Setup Program.
Before I go any further though, my particular solution might not work for
everyone (and I take no responsibility for problems that result from trying
this solution - use it at your own risk), specifically because I originally
had Office XP (with the OSB installed) and in my attempts to find a
work-around, I also ended up installing and then uninstalling the OSB that
comes with Office 97 (this was after my upgrade and loss of the Office XP
OSB). However, if you're interested in trying out my solution, then here is
what you need to do:

First, if you didn't initially have Office XP with the OSB installed, there
are probably registry keys that you need to add to the registry. I don't
know exactly what keys are necessary (since for me, they were all there
already from my previous Office XP installation), but if you need some help,
you can email me and I might be able to point you in the right direction or
provide some help.

Second, the following files from an Office XP installation need to be put
back into the following directories (please note - I don't know if all or
even most of these files are necessary; I discovered that these were the
files that were created when I attempted to install Office XP with only the
OSB and nothing else):

Third, you'll need to put the following shortcut into your startup menu:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar\Office10\OSA.EXE" -b -l
You should probably name this shortcut "Microsoft Office"

One known issue is that the Office 2003 Icons don't display entirely
correctly in the Office XP OSB. It apparently can't display all the colors,
and as a result, the icons look very washed out and pretty bad in my
opinion. You might want to try and recover the icons from the Office XP
program executables and use those instead. Also, it appears as if the OSB
pulls some of its icons from the following location: C:\Documents and
Settings\<USERNAME>\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Shortcut Bar\Office

Now, if everything worked correctly, when you launch that shortcut, you
should see the Office XP OSB, and upon each reboot the OSB should
automatically launch. Of course, like I said earlier, I don't know if this
will work for everyone, but I figured I'd at least post my results and
solution. If anyone has any comments or suggestions regarding this possible
solution, I'd love to hear them. Hope this helps some of you out there!!

I haven't had any trouble every time I've tried to get the OSB from Office
XP to coexist with the Tools from MOS 2003, by simply installing MOS2003,
then in Office XP's setup selecting the SB or any/all the tools from XP.
They work fine. I didn't have to go to the registry; but I'm sure some
keys/values were added. I'm trying to understand, since you didn't use this
method what you did.

I needed the Visual Keyboard - I work in two languages. I am using Office 2003. When I tried to install the k/b I got a message saying that i could not install the k/b because I did not have and Office 2000 installed so I tried just what you did. I installed a couple of tools from Office 2000 and was then able to install the Key Board. All was well until I tried to answer an email in Outlook. Although I had selected Word 2003 as my default editor I got a message that Word 2003 was not available and Outlook was launching its own editor. I think that when I installed Office 2003/ tools I somehow made Word 2003 invisable to Outlook 2003.
I am going to try uninstalling Office 2003 in total and then reinstall it to see if the last man in sets the key.
What i don't understand is just why MS discontinue popular add ins like Tool bar and Visual Key Board from the latest version of Office.

The reason I did what I did (and posted it here) is for the exact reason
that I didn't want what happened to Peebs (or something similar) in his
reply to your post which was a reply to mine to happen to me. I know as
well as the next person that when you install a microsoft product, the
installation routine and process does a lot more than you can see, and since
Microsoft doesn't recommend installing an older version of Office on top of
a newer one, I was fearful of what would happen if I were to try installing
even just the OSB from Office XP on top of Office 2003...especially after my
research and reading about some other people who had problems doing just
that. Therefore, I decided to see if I could get the OSB from Office XP to
work without having to run any install processes. Apparently all the
registry entries were already there (probably because I had previously had
Office XP and Office XP's OSB installed before upgrading to Office 2003),
and so all I had to do was add a few files to particular locations (see my
original post) and figure out the correct command-line switches for Office
XP's osa.exe file and voila...I got the Office XP OSB working without having
to run any kind of install process. I hope this explains what I was aiming
for and the reason I posted my results...
