Office 2003 - open file hungapp

I am an Access 2003 database developer. I have Office 2003 Professional
and OneNote 2007 installed on my computer. I'm using OneCare for virus, etc.

I am having a problem in my Office programs. When I try to open a file
and the Open File requestor comes up, if I click the down arrow in the
Look In box, the program hangs, every time. This is especially
troublesome in Access, the program I work in most, but happens in Word,
Excel & Publisher. In OneNote07 I get an 'initializing root folders'
dialog that pops up when I click the down arrow which seems to take
forever, but eventually the dropdown works. I don't use Outlook but just
tried and it happens there also. If I can remember not to use the drop
down but instead hit the 'up one level' button, I have no problem.

I am running Windows XP Pro, on a fairly new Dell with a core2duo
processor & 2 gig of memory. I DO have a long drive list -- 4 hd
partitions, 2 external drives, and a card reader that adds 4 drive
letters, and usually have a flash drive plugged in, plus 2 cd drives.
But it seems to me that it's only been fairly recently that this problem
started.

I just tried it on my old, low powered notebook which also has office
Pro 03 and OneNote 2007 and it happens there too. I begin to wonder if
it is related to OneNote 07 somehow.

I have all XP Pro and Office updates applied. Any thoughts would be
appreciated. It's getting annoying!

Judy

PS If there's a better group to post this in I'd appreciate being
pointed in the right direction. Thanks.

One addition piece of info -- if I wait long enough (90 seconds or more
- I timed it) the drop down will sometimes pop open--eventually.

Thanks! I think I know now what the problem was. I have an HP7310
printer that has a card reader built in. I recently had to unplug it
from the network and plug it in directly via USB -- was having problems
with it over the network. But the network connections to the card reader
were still there. Once I disconnected those the problem is gone!

Thanks so much.
