Office 2003 Pro hangs when opening files

Please can anyone help me.
In both Word & Excel when I try to open a file (.doc or .xls) or even try to
double click on a directory from the 'File' 'Open' menu the program hangs and
then crashes my system! I haven't loaded any new programs, I haven't done
anything different to the PC at all, just switched it on then gone into the
application and tried to open a file. I've done virus checks, nothing. I've
scanned the registry for tracking stuff, nothing. Automatic updates are on
and functioning fine. It's a legal, activated Microsoft Office 2003
professional installation and has been running without a hitch for months.
Anyone any ideas, please - I'm at a loss!
Thanks

Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell
after you install security update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

Easy Fix: Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll
down to Item No. 383 "Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software - Fix (MS06-015)"
to download a registry fix.

Note: You may need to temporarily disable your antivirus program
in order to safely run the scripted fix.

Also, review the following:

Mary
Thank you so much - the fix from Kelly's was brillient and it now all works.
One problem, as a result I'm now getting the Microsoft Visual Basic error
box back saying Compile Error in hidden module: AutoExec. I got rid of this
on the advice of a MVP a few weeks ago, where it was suggested I rename two
files, but now it's back. Any quick fixes?
Thanks
Sally

I am having the same problem. Anybody got any ideas? Same here... no
viruses, checked for spyware, checked network shares. I even completely
uninstalled office and re-installed.

Please read the solutions already there in this thread.

Try this:
Problems in Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install
security update MS06-015 (15 Apr-06)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/918165

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx has
been revised to v1.1 to reflect the issues in KB918165 and now points
to the KB918165.

Now may not be the time to learn Regedit.
I suggest you use a .reg file already done for the purpose.

http://patch-info.de/WinXP/Downloads/KB908531_Share-To-Web.zip

Unzip it, extract the .reg file to a folder, right-click it and select
Merge and confirm when asked.
