But the new icon for the Shortcut Bar is there and if one hovers over it a tool tip comes up and says it's the shortcut to the shortcut bar and defines the shortcut bar.

tks,

Just a guess, but did you do an upgrade install from an earlier version
of Office? I suspect that the icon is left over from the older version
of Office.

Reposting from Bob Buckland:

The Office Shortcut Bar (OSB/MSOffice.exe) was discontinued
by Microsoft after Office XP. Here are some approaches you
may want to consider

1. 3rd party products.

There are what appear to be free 3rd party toolbars
that some folks say they like using.\

This one is is similar to use to the OSB
http://jetaudio.com/products/jettoolbar
one that has a number of configuration options
http://h-menu.com/main_en.htm
and one that is a bit more techie oriented but with
added features would be this one.

2. Using Windows Toolbar Customization Features

a. You can use the Quicklaunch toolbar in
Windows and drag copies of your Office shortcuts
to it, or

b. Create a new Toolbar by right clicking
on a blank spot on the Windows Taskbar, unlocking it
and creating a new toolbar(folder) and drag the Office
or other shortcut icons to it. You can tear off that
toolbar and place it and size it as needed anywhere on
your desktop.

3. Use an Older version of the Office Shortcut Bar

If you have an older version of Office with the shortcut
bar and running MSOffice.exe from Start=>Run doesn't
start it, you can do a custom install of the old version
of Office and choose just the Shortcut bar. (Note that this
may put a great deal of the core old Office files back on
the PC if you've removed the older version). The OSB
should work, but will be 'as is' and doesn't support
things like high resolution icons. You may also be
prompted to install updates to the older Office version
when visiting http://officeupdate.com

If your upgrade leaves any part of a previous Office version -- for example
you had Office Pro with Access and just installed Office 2003 Standard, the
OSB will still be there but you won't actually be able to control it --
there is no entry for it in the Startup group and most of the other entries
for it will have been removed.

I've been using the JetTooBar for several months now and like it very much.
It has most of the features that were available in the OSB and is very easy
to configure. http://www.jetaudio.com/download/jettoolbar.html

Then send your cards and letters to (e-mail address removed)

In the meantime, try one of the other tools mentioned in Eric's message.
The JetToolBar is the easiest to configure but the others have nifty
features too.
