I was having trouble with Word 2003 doing wierd stuff (foreign characters not
working, outline view toolbar flickers annoyingly, document map randomly
turning itself off, toolbars that I had closed suddently coming back, and
EndNote 7 shutting down at random), and finally decided after tearing my hair
out and trying everything else that the best advice was to uninstall and
re-install Office.
I went on to uninstall it, realizing too late that the CD I have is the
backup copy for my old OEM Office XP (on my desktop computer at home), and
not the 2003 version I have on this laptop computer! I tried to un-do this,
using system restore and a registry backup, but it didn't quite work. And now
the registry backup copy seems to have disappeared after I ran system restore
again.
Now, I would just re-install from CD but I am currently studying in the UK,
and the original CD is in the US. 2003 is a copy licensed to my father
through his company for home use (I have borrowed his laptop temporarily),
and is not an OEM version.
I think I have the correct key (recovered using a keyfinder), but I am
afraid to try the Windows Install Clean Up in case it breaks the whole thing.
I am currently working on a major piece of writing (my PhD dissertation) and
I don't want to run the risk of losing Word entirely.
The actual program files appear to be in the OFFICE11 directory, where they
should be, and they start up. However, I get various errors about patch
files, the program not being installed for this user (there is only one
account defined), and so on. The program then shuts down. Windows Installer
pops up whenever I open an Office XP program, but they otherwise seem to work
OK, even though it is technically not registered for this computer.
Incidentally, Microsoft's Genuine Advantage still thinks that the 2003
version is registered, so I don't think I have managed to delete whatever it
is that stores the activation information. Both versions are legally owned by
me--I'm not trying to figure out how to make a pirated version work, although
I am also worried that the XP version will stop working at some point.
Any suggestions?
