Office 2003 Security update does not install...

I am up to date on all my Windows updates as of 2/22/07. I am on Windows XP
Pro.

To date, all has been fine with automated updating for Office. However this
latest update for me on 2/22/07 did not install.

I looked at the registry per article:
Knowledge Base article KB884298

and this registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Delivery\SourceEngine\Downloads\download_code

does not exist at all....all the paths down to download_code are there fine,
but there is nothing called "download_code".

Now what do I do?

Probably the culprit was Iolo System Mechanic 7, which is a fairly new
release of System Mechanic....I have never had a problem with System Mechanic
before. However, that is water under the bridge because the registry entry
now simply is not there and I am not sure what to do next.

I am NOT a tekkie....would it be best to simply just reinstall Office 2003?
Or is there a fairly simple fix other than that? I do not think my last
registry backup would be able to help because I have run System Mechanic 7
MANY times, probably without knowing that it may have wiped out the entry, so
it is probably gone in all the recent backups.

Thanks for any help.

Does your Reg cleaner store the reg back ups after each scan? If it does the
advice I was given was to restore each back up starting with the most recent
until after a date where I knew a successful update had occured. It didn't
work for me but there is logic in the advice. I had to restore my system from
a disk image I had fortuitously made. The OS is 2000 Pro so no System
Restore. You have System Restore with XP Pro? If you do you could try to find
a restore point around the last successful update. Another tip was never to
set for automatic scan and clean - always manual. Similarly for updates. The
other advice from a guru was for users except the most knowledgeable, never
to use Reg Cleaners. Don't fix it if it aint broken. Advice I shall now
follow.

Thank you for your submission. Ok, first of all, Iolo (maker of System
Mechanic) have responded to posting on their board with several of their own
tech knowledge base articles that I need to go through.

Next, to answer you above, a registry copy is supposed to be taken during
each run. So I will have to see if the copy overlays the prior, or if there
is any history of registry backups. I do know if there will be history of
registry backups dating back to pre-System Mechanic 7 runs. Maybe iolo tech
articles with direct me with that...I will have to see

I do not know if Windows XP Professional has System Restore points that are
taken...I do not know enough about the operating system to know that right
now. If something is being done, it is whatever a default install of XP Pro
provides....I took NO special measures to manually do system backups within
Microsoft windows...if one is being scheduled and done, it has to be a
default.

I do regularly take system backups to a Data Center off site, but since it
is daily, all I would have is the system image from the prior day, which does
me NO good. I did not, nor do not, take disk images manually, as you
FORTUNATELY had available for your own case.

Weeeelllll, let me see what the System Mechanic tech articles have to
say....if any other Microsoft Office users on this forum have anything else
it would be welcome. For now, it seemed like the tech article I mentioned
was the most relevant (KB article), but maybe there is some other fix or
article.

Would a restore of MS Office reinstate the registry entries needed to
continue to do Office Updates?

I hate having to manually use regedit but I will if I have to.

By the way, all Microsoft *Windows* updates from the automated security or
required updates application continue to apply unabated. It is just Office
updates that is stuck.

Thanks...dsteve54

You could have a look at Peter Foldes reply to my problem in the thread
"Unsuccessful Update office 2003". I think I read in another thread that it
had been successfully used.

Molcatuk,
Way to go, good one....I will just have to look at this and all the other
resources I have mentioned and see....for now, I am simply just gyrating
around and still up in the air, but when I study all of them, maybe a course
of action will surface.

Thx,
