Today I contacted Microsoft to see if I could be put on a mailing list to
receive the SP2 update. That way I wouldn't have to keep checking on the
availability. I was told that NOT ONLY COULD I NOT BE PLACED ON SUCH A
MAILING LIST, but, also, Microsoft WOULD NOT BE PROVIDING AN OPTION for its
customers to receive this, or future service packs, from them on CD. I filed
a complaint, as any of you can do, by calling their sales number at (800)
426-9400. I told them of the number of posts on this forum regarding
problems with this service pack and suggested that they visit the forum to
see for themselves. Further I was told that there has been no demand for
such a service pack. So if you want Microsoft to release one on CD you'll
need to call them to put in a request. Otherwise they will assume that no
one really is interested in having them spend the extra funds to produce and
mail it to their customers.
From my own perspective having this on a CD is vital. Currently I'm having
to rebuild my operating system (XP Pro) because it failed. Having CD's like
this, especially the more recent ones that are so large, is a necessity to
cut down on the rebuild time. Additionally I cannot currently obtain a
broadband provider because of an expected move in the future. There is no
portability of broadband service, which is universally an annual contract,
meaning that I would have to again pay for another annual contract after the
move.
I hope this is helpful, and I would again urge anyone to contact Microsoft
for the Office Service Pack 2 on CD. Otherwise this will become the way all
future service packs will be provided, and THEY AREN'T GOING TO GET ANY
SMALLER.
Good Luck,
Wally
