OFFICE 2003 Service Pack 2 install keeps failing

M

Martin

I have tried to install the OFFICE 2004 SP2 upgrade several times but it
keeps failing. I have tried the full install but it was the same.

I get the screen shown below. I never get as far as entering any numbers or
being asked for the installation CD to put in the drive. The Registry shows
the correct drive for the original installation so I don't need to enter that.

Any ideas?

Martin

Install the required updates using the "Fullfile" version of updates.

The installation failure can likely be fixed by installing the "Fullfile"
version of updates, which should not require access to the product CD or
network installation location during installation. The"Fullfile" version of
an update contains extra information and is therefore larger in size than the
corresponding update on the Office Update site.
To install the "Fullfile" version of updates, click on the Check for updates
using larger update files... link below

Try installation again with a smaller number of updates.

Updates that failed to install when they were installed together as a group
may successfully install if they are installed individually. If you were
installing mutliple updates when update installation failed, perform
detection again and try installing each update on its own.
Do you have enough disk space to install the selected updates?

The Office Update site downloads and installs patches using the hard disk
drive (or drive partition) where Windows is installed. This is usually the
"C:" drive. The amount of hard disk space required is approximately three
times the download size of the selected updates. Check to see if you have
sufficient disk space and free up additional space if necessary.
I am confused about which Office product CD the Installation Wizard requires.

Please insert the CD that you used when you installed Office. For example,
if you have Office 2000 Small Business Edition (SBE), insert the Office 2000
SBE CDs that you used for the installation. The .msi files being requested
are located on the CD(s) that you installed your Office product from. Insert
the Office product CD into your CD drive, and then in the dialog box,
navigate to or search for the .msi file on your CD drive. Depending on which
application is being updated, the .msi file may be located on Office CD1 or
CD2. If you have individual Office products installed (Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, FrontPage, Publisher, InfoPath, or OneNote),
insert the product CD for the specific product that you are updating. For
example, if you have the Office 2000 Standard suite (Word 2000, Excel 2000,
PowerPoint 2000, Outlook 2000) installed along with the individual FrontPage
2000 product, insert the Office 2000 Standard CD if you are installing
updates for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook. If you are installing an
update for FrontPage 2000, insert the FrontPage 2000 CD.

If you have Microsoft Works Suite 2000, 2001, or 2002 installed along with
Office, the Office Update site allows you to update the Word 2000 or 2002
application that comes with the Works suite. Insert the Works CD to update
Word.

If you are installing updates for Office XP or Office 2003 products, you can
avoid the CD requirement by installing "Full-File" updates. Please refer to
the "Install the required updates using "Full-File" version of updates" topic
above for more information.

Note If you purchased a computer on which Office was preinstalled and you
did not receive a set of Office CDs with the computer, contact the company
that sold you the computer (the original equipment manufacturer or OEM) and
request a set of CDs.

The Installation Wizard could not find the requested file on the CD I
provided.

It is possible that you are not providing the CD for the correct Office
product. Please refer to the "I am confused about which Office product CD the
Installation Wizard requires" topic above for more information about which
Office product CD you should insert during installation. In most cases you
can avoid the CD requirement by installing "FullFile" updates. Please refer
to the "Install the required updates using "FullFile" version of updates"
topic above for more information.

If you continue to experience problems, there may be a problem with your
product CD. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance.

Registry cleanup software may have removed registry keys needed to install
updates.

If you use registry cleanup software, Office 2003 product registry keys
needed to install updates may have been removed. Follow the directions in
Knowledge Base article KB884298 to fix the problem.

Check for updates and try installation again

Did you try a Detect and Repair from the help menu of any of your office
apps? Then try installing the Full File.

Hi,

Just a thought, do you have any firewall or anti-virus installed?

It did not work for me until I disabled NIS 2005 for firewall and
anti-virus, and strange thing is that it did not even give any error
messages.

Yes usual Norton protection.

Not very good if I have to turn off the firewall during installation. But
my desktop PC installed OK and that also has Norton running though it is 2004
whereas my laptop has 2005. Must be some parameter in Norton that needs
changing.

Might explain why so many people are having problems.

I downloaded the full .EXE file and that seems to have installed OK.

It never asked for my to put installation disc in or enter any numbers but
all seems OK with SP2 showing in the "About" information for OUTLOOK.

Hi,

Yes, not a good idea to turn off firewall but seems we have to comprise for
one way or the other.

I also found another interesting thing from the updating my three home
systems using full downloaded version.

Even after I completed the update on the local side, office update would
still show that I need to install those updates.

And I had to let the online update to run it again (by turning off Firewall
and Anti-virus) before office update would remove all updates.

Previously, if I remembered correctly, as long as you completed local
installation, online update will not long show up which is not the case for
this SP.

Just checked and Office Update is quite happy and shows that there
outstanding updates needed.

Hello.

I'm having the same problem as Martin but when I try to run detect & repair
I get an error "Error 1327. Invalid Drive: F:\" I have checked the registry
and it is set to H: which is my CD drive. I tried shutting off Norton, Zone
Alarm, and Microsoft Anti Spyware. Install still fails. Have tried
repairing the installation from Add/Remove Programs and from the original CD
and I get the same error 1327. Any ideas?

OK, for anyone else having this problem, I got it updated using KB article
#KB884298. Found this article by searching "error 1327"
