In the Windows Update newsgroup, there's a lot of folks unable to install
Office 2003 SP2, though it downloads fine. We're all getting Error Code
0x51F, except for one who got 0x530. It doesn't matter if we use Automatic
Updates or Microsoft Update, or if Selective Startup is used.

Same here, except I get error 0x80070643. I also downloaded the Office SP2
files, ran it, and to the message "Update cannot be applied" message.

What's going on here?

What about people who bypassed WU/MU and simply downloaded the file
straight? That's what I did, so perhaps I was lucky going that route. Maybe
you can download the "full" file to get around the problem now?

I did that too but to no avail. When I ran the downloaded files (both
version) I get an error message saying "Update cannot be applied."

I was able to install the download but it took a bunch of doing....

I looked in C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log and found the failure to install was
identified with error code 0x80070643

A Google search brought me to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836937

The first fix, renaming the Edb.log file worked but I had to reboot into Safe
Mode to rename it. Then I rebooted into normal mode and the update installed
with no problems.

Hope this will work for you as well, if not there are several other things to
try mentioned in that KB article.

Well what ever this morning when I booted up and looked at the office version
tag I noticed I had sp2 last thing that happened I still had that automatic
download that kept failing and the other files from the likns posted would
not install or said not expected file. any how is installed and can see no
differences so will suck it and see
mind you generall office 2003 pro and mx pro have been very stable in past
and this sort of bulldust is uncommon.

Hi,

Thanks for your advice. Unfortunately, it didn't work. I looked at the
OfficeUpdate log and noticed that the update was failing at updating Office
2003 Web Components.

Once I remove Web Components (by Add/Remove) the update was installed
successfully. Fortunately, I don't need Office 2003 Add-in: Office Web
Components because I don't publish interactive data to web pages.

Whew!

Glad you got it working. I think the secret of success is to check the logs
for the error that occurred, the error messages that pop up when the
installation fails aren't enough information to work with.

I'm wondering what your WindowsUpdate.log showed as the error? It might give
you an error number that would get you to the Microsoft KB and allow you to
install the update and keep the Office Web Components in case you ever do
have use for them.

I did. I think it said Office 2003 Web Components error code 1603, which
basically says "Fatal Error" and nothing else.

That's wasn't much help for you :-( but thanks for the information.

NP. I thought you already resolved your problem?

I don't consider the problem resolved. I had to download the service pack
and rename a file because I couldn't get it to install from Windows
Update, you had to remove the Web Components, others have had to use
various tricks to get the SP to install and there's been a lot of
discussion in the newsgroups about it.

I *have* to think this isn't normal, there's something wrong somewhere
that needs fixing but I haven't a guess what it could be.

Lots of things get downloaded and installed from Windows Update with no
problems so when something goes wrong for so many folks I have to
wonder.....

Let's hope Microsoft is taking a look at this!

Hi,

Thanks, I agree that there is a problem. Since you seem like an expert, I
have another issue I'm wondering if you can help me diagnosis and fix.

I can't seem to play streaming video from within my IE browse (IE6 and
WMP10). I can play videos within the WMP itself, but can't seem to strream
video off the Internet. For example, I can't play videos at video.msn.com
but I can play videos at www.cbsnews.com, provided that I switch to
RealPlayer instead of WMP10. When I try to stream videos using WMP10 (from
IE6), I just get a msg saying "loading video..." but it eventually times out
with no error messages.

I reinstalled WMP10 and IE6 numerous times but to no avail.

I also posted this on the newsgroup but no one seems to have a solution. :-(

WOW, do I have you fooled! ;-) Actually, I'm as far from expert as is
possible where Office is concerned, I'm here because I'm trying to learn
more about it. I had little need to use it until my current "job" so I'm
trying to learn as much as I can as fast as I can.

I'll bet someone knows but I don't, I almost never use WMP and the only
problem I had with streaming video was my own fault, I'd set my firewall
incorrectly and it wouldn't allow WMP to connect.

From your message I'm guessing that if you right click on a video and tell it
to download to your computer you can play it after it downloads?

The only good advice I can offer is to take a look at the WMP newsgroups and
see if there's any help there.

Hope this gets you your answer.
