Office 2003 Setup cannot continue because the installation source has been corrupted

April

I am trying to install Office 2003 Standard Edition (upgrade) to my Windows
2000 Pro SP PC. When I run SETUP.EXE from the CD, I get as far as entering
the product key. After clicking NEXT I get an error message:
Office Setup cannot continue because the installation source has been
corrupted

I know that the message is totally bogus since I can take the CD to another
W2K PC, and it will go further through the setup than it does on machine #1.
I can also copy the contents of the CD to machine #1's hard drive, and run
setup.exe from the hard drive, but the same error occurs at the same point
in the installation.

In googling this message all I can find is something about the XML Parser,
and to download the latest version, which I have done....all to no avail. I
have also disabled everything in the Startup group (via MSCONFIG) and also
rebooted in Safe Mode, all to no affect. Same error message, at the same
point during the install.

The only thing I've been able to determine is that somehow the XML Parser is
part of the insallation wizard, and something must be amiss with the XML
Parser component, even though the error message gives one the impression
something is wrong with the source CD. I know something is wrong with the
XML Parser because one cannot register it from a command line. Typing:

REGSVR32 MSXML3.DLL generates an error:

DllRegisterServer in msxml3.dll failed. Return code was: 0x80070005

I'm stuck with a recently purchased copy of Office 2003, and I can't install
it. There's nothing malfunctioning on this PC. There are no viruses, or
trojans, etc. IE6 has been uninstalled and reinstalled, but still no
difference.

Any ideas?

What is "Windows 2000 Pro SP"? Sounds like some version of Office 2003
or Office 2007 is already installed on the PC, and you are trying to
install Office 2003 Standard Edition over the existing version.

What is "Windows 2000 Pro SP"?

Windows 2000? You've never heard of Windows 2000? W2K comes in a Pro
version, and a Server version. The SP stands for Service Pack, as in
Service Pack 4.

No. You can't install Office 2007 on a Windows 2000 PC. Office 2007 only
runs on XP and Vista.

Have you reviewed your update history, in particular Net Framework & MSXML
updates, to see if there are any failures?

Run MSupdate, review history

Sorry, no go. See below:

C:\>MSupdate
'MSupdate' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

Windows 2000 doesn't have Microsoft Update. 2000 only had Windows Update,
which doesn't work, by the way (off the START button, that is). START >
WINDOWS UPDATE launches an empty Internet Explorer window. It's been that
way, off and on, for years.

I meant run MSUpdate via Internet Explorer (also known as windows update)
(In IE, Tools>Windows Update)

Thanks, but as I explained in my last posting, the Windows Update page in IE
is totally blank. I simply get the http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ URL
in the address bar, but nothing below in the page view. And as I've stated
in my last posting, this blank page syndrome has plagued me on and off for
least a year. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't bring up any page.
In fact, I get better results from this URL in Firefox, for at least I can
see a readable page in Firefox (which basically tells me I should be using
IE). And yes, I am using IE 6, and cleared all my temp files, and disabled
my personal firewall and added http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to my list
of trusted sites. And yes, Javascript is turned on.

Tried this

I do get that page, however, it displays this message:

Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

When I click 'Continue' it keeps displaying the very same message. I.e., it
keeps displaying:

Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)

In short, you end up in a loop.

Yes, I can go there, but there are dozens of downloads to pick from. I've
forgotten what it is we're trying to do here.
I assume you have run the administrative update for your sp's or has
autoupdate worked?

I always am logged in as Administrator.

Auto update has worked for years, but I couldn't swear that it is working as
we speak. I haven't seen an update notice for 2-3 weeks.

Some of the system files on your PC are corrupted and, or, no longer
registered
I have seen a solution to your 'update' problem in the windows update group,
I'd suggest you post your update problem there
microsoft.public.windowsupdate

Office is likely not installing because of this issue, or leastways because
of a failed or missing update.
specifically with netframework or msxml

Allthough you could try this, as show below; (curtesey of Carey Frisch MVP)
-------------------------------
Your problem can be corrected by re-registering the various dll files that
Windows Update requires to run.

To do this click on the "Start" button then "Run" and enter the following
command into the "Run" dialog box

(be sure to press the Enter key on your keyboard after each entry)

· regsvr32 wuapi.dll

You should then receive a message to say it was successful. The above
process then needs to be done for each of the following commands:

· regsvr32 wups.dll

· regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

· regsvr32 wucltui.dll

· regsvr32 atl.dll

· regsvr32 msxml3.dll

Afterward, please restart your computer.

I solved all the problems by reinstalling Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, and
the SP4 Update Rollup 1.

I also have to say that I dislike Office 2003 (Outlook 2003 in particular)
and after all this work, decided to uninstall Office 2003 Standard and
return back to Office 2000 Premium. I'm looking to sell an opened version
of Office 2003 Standard Edition if anyone is interested (un-validated).

Well each to its own I suppose
You do realise Office2k is no longer supported, will come to the end of
critical updates in the none too distant future. In edition OL2003 format
data file is more robust than 2k data file and doesnt have the size limit.
In edition its unsupported on Vista

That's fine. It's worked fine for 7 years. I have no reason to expect the
software to not work for the next 7 years if I keep it on a W2K O/S.

Nothing can be that critical that hasn't already been flushed out and found
in the last 7 years.

I've installed Vista on another PC and don't like it. Fortunately I set
that other PC with dual boot, and set the default to W2K rather than Vista.

The problems with Office 2003 Standard addition are:

1) It killed my Frontpage 2000 and Access 2000

2) MS in their infinite wisdom removed the Outlook vertical button/shortcut
bar. I need the Outlook shortcut bar, the folder view, the list view and
preview window all visible. It is impossible to get this with Outlook 2003.

The pain isn't worth the gain. Part of it may be my fault for upgrading
Office 2000 PREMIUM to Office 20003 Standard, however, nowhere does MS warn
that you will lose previous versions of Frontpage and Access by installing
O2003 Standard.

Oh, and one more peeve. There's no way to change the font face/size for the
Folder View in Outlook 2003. I use Outlook the most of all the apps in
Office. And it is the app that Office 2003 mucked up the most as far as the
interface is concerned in moving from 2000 to 2003.

You lost me on this one. What exactly is limited to 2048 bytes?

Son of a gun, I was right after all (in a roundabout sort of way since SP 4
was having problems.)
