Office 2003 setup problems

I recently re-installed Office Student & Teacher after a hard disk format on
XP Home system.

When I access Word and Excel a Windows Installer window appears with the
message “Preparing to Instalâ€.

After a lengthy delay a Microsoft Office Word 11 window appears with the
message An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly.
Please run setup and select “Repair.......†to restore this application.

When I click OK the program appears.

Also the @ and “ are transposed. I have selected English Australia as my
default langusage.

In order to fix the problem I have attempted to run setup again by inserting
the Installation disk and running setup. I then get the message :-

“This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package
exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to
verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package.†I have
previously used this set of original disks so there is no question as to its
authenticity.

The same thing happens when I try to repair the program through Control
Panel and the add remove programs section.
