Office 2003 SP1 and faulty update checking mechanism.

In addition to Office 2003 SP1 not installing, the online
previous update checking mechanism doesn't work properly.
I have previously successfully installed Office 2003
updates but the previously installed update checker says
that there are not previously installed updates. Why?????
