Office 2003 SP1 update Registry Error

K

Kevink

I was given a promotional version of Office Professional
2003 (official product key etc, it looks like the real
thing)and successfully upgraded from Office 2000.
However, when I tried to apply the SP1 update I got a
blue screen with the error "Registry Error" and the usual
memory dump. I tried reinstalling 2003, again worked ok,
again got the "Registry Error" when applying the update.
I tried Registry Mechanic, but when I applied the clean,
it hosed my registry completely. I ended up re-
installing XP. Everyhting worked fine, except when I
applied the 2003 update I again got the blue screen
and "Registry Error". Do I have a limited version of
Office 2003 or is there someting wrong with SP1 or do I
have a pc problem ? Any advice would be greatly
appreciated.

Kevnink--

I'm sorry you had to reinstall XP. I hope you didn't lose anything and were
backed up. I doubt that you have a PC problem that has any impact on this.
There have been a number of issues you can see from this group but if you
can get the error messages up and you may have to send your hotfix log to
someone equipped to read it and give you feedback.

It sounds like you were given a promotional version that *is the real thing
of MOS 2003*--it doesn't just look like it. The only difference was that it
didn't have a BCM CD in it and different packaging. It is not limited in any
sense--it has the same code as the boxed edition exactly. It is the same
CD. It probably came in a foldout and also had One Note with it. Be sure to
use One Note. I think it's one of their best apps and has nice potential.
Let's see what error messages you are getting from Event Viewer.

Can you please go to your run box>type in "eventvwr.msc" without the quotes,
stretch it out, click on Application, and at the time of your error you
should see a series of error marked with yellow or a red "X" but the
important thing is the source will be MsiInstaller. Click on those and you
can copy them by hitting the symbol under the down error and paste up here.
There may be an easy solution or a tool that will help you and if you start
scrollig these posts, you'll see what I mean.

Best,

Chad Harris

Actually, it's unlikely that the SP1 logs will help much in a blue screen
scenario. I would suspect something in your Windows configuration or
hardware. Windows does a pretty good job of logging system failures in the
Event Viewer. It may give you some indication of the problem.
Unfortunately, I'm not trained on interpreting those logs. You should
contact Product Support to get someone to help out with that.

Thanks guys !
Chad you're right, my MSO was in a fold-out and it did
have One Note - which I haven't bothered with - but will
now. I did search this message board and did notice that
many people are having problems with SP1, however none
have had blue screens. I have a nasty feeling that
Sloan's right, but I'll check the logs as suggested and
get back.
Thanks !!

Sloan, Chad,
I added the main 3 components separately of the SP1
update with no problem. But again when I applied SP1 I
got the same blue screen. The error message on event
viewer was:

It certainly looks like a registry problem, but my
expertise ends here, I'm not sure how to correct it, I've
already tried re-installing XP and Registry Mechanic made
things worse. I'm thinking a whole new installation is
my only hope, I reckon, the registry problem is probably
with non-XP related components.
Any ideas ?

Kevnink--

Kevnik--double check to make sure that you have all the error messages in
Event Viewer that happen connected with this, and also at the time you're
seeing the BSOD, particularly not so much the Event ID but the error number.

Also did you get the chance to see the error message in English and the stop
error number on your BSOD? You can go to Windows Key+Pause Break>System
Properties>Advanced tab>Error Reporting Button>Take Check Out of
Automatically Restart if your blue screens have been too fleeting for you
to see the info.

Have you installed any new hardware for your PC, memory sticks, ect. Any
new drivers?

If Sloan is unable to help further, and he is the professional at this and
light years more equipped in Office setup situation problem solving than I
am, you might give MSFT Support a call--they will support you as a free
incident if you are having a Hotfix installation problem.

Best,

Chad Harris
