Office 2003 SP1 update won't install

After checking for available updates, the system replied with a list of SP1
update that are needed. I downloaded the fullfile version of the update ok.
At install, I get the message "Configuring FrontPage 2003" and after about a
minute, a dialogue box appears with the message "The update cannot be
applied." The only available response is "OK" which takes me out of the
update process.

Thanks for the link. I followed the thread to about 4 more articles - I want
to be really careful when I'm messing around with regedit - and I'll give it
a shot!

After following the thread of docs and printing and reading about 12 support
docs, I backed up my "live state," reviewed the list of about 80 GUID product
codes in the registry and wrote down 18 of them that related to the Microsoft
office products installed. I then went to the download codes and found only
one code (it happened to be for Office Professional Enterprise). I tried to
enter a path for this product, (originally loaded from disk on my D:\ drive)
but the entry was already there.

Where do I go from here?

Try uninstalling FrontPage 2003, reboot, and then try the OfficeUpdate
site again.

I know it's been about 2 months since I last contacted you on this, but I was
away and unable to work the problem. I uninstalled Frontpage, and tried to
run the update using live update. It selected One Note SP1, Visio SP1 and
Project SP1 updates. I tried updating one at a time, each time using the
fullfile version. I get the same message, "update cannot be applied," only,
now, I don't have Front Page installed. I'm really aggravated about this
since I have perfectly valid, authenticated versions of the software
installed and I cannot update them.

I've sent a couple of responses but haven't heard back from you. Is there
any other info I can provide - I'm really stymied!

I am having a similar problem. Just installed office 2003 pro as an update to
office 97 under windows XP pro SP2. I can detect that I need some updates,
the files appear to download ok but the install is unsuccessful. I have
tried all the things that MC suggests except for wiping everything out and
starting over from stratch, Any suggestions??

I wish I did have a suggestion. I've been stuck in the same place for 2
months and don't know where to go for help at this point. Please let me know
if you have any other sources or find out anything regarding this.

OK

I will post if I learn anything new.
I guess we need to go out into non MS newsgroups and ask for help.

I just think it's criminal that Microsoft provides no reasonable support for
a newly installed product. I'd appreciate any info you find out!

Try this and let us know if the update installed

1st Rename Office subkeys

Note: Removing the following registry keys may reset customized user
settings for your Microsoft Office programs.

1. Close all the applications.
2. Click on Start->Run, type in REGEDIT and click on OK.
3. Locate and select the following registry subkeys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0

4. Right click on 11.0 and rename them to Old11.
5. Close the Registry Editor.

2nd. Detect and Repair Office 2003

1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
3. Click Change/Remove Programs on the left pane.
4. Highlight Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 on the right pane
and click Change.
5. Insert the correct version of CD when it requires.
6. Select “Reinstall and Repair†and click Next.
7. Select “Detect and Repair errors in my Office installationâ€.
8. Click Install and wait the process to end.

3rd. Install the Updates
