Glen--
To get the error messages so Sloan can see them, go to Event Viewer. Put "eventvwr.msc" or "eventvwr.exe" in your run box. Stretch it out and Click on Application and in the Source Column look for errors that say "MSIInstaller" at the time your install aborted.
Also make sure you go here. Put "services.msc" in your run box and *make sure the Office Source Engine is started*--that has been tripping up a few people with hotfix installs lately. Some hotfixes require it, and some don't, but I always have it started if I'm going to try to install anything to do with Office. Then you can kill it at Task Manager if you're pressed for CPU once you get the install in.
You can also find verbose hotfix logs to attach for someone with the tools and knowledge to review here:
Log files are created in the '%temp%\ohotfix' folder that provide an
indication of what might be causing the installation to fail. The file you
want will have a name like 'OHotfix(0000x).log' where 'x' is a number. It
will likely be the most recent of these files.
Also you might try these depending on what errors you see:
1) Try installing the full file instead of the client file which will be the bottom one on the downloads page here:
Office 2003 Service Pack 1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...A6-7CB1-4F61-837E-5F938254FC47&displaylang=en
2) Take a look at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;875556
"Installation Error: File not Found" error message when you try to update
Office 2003 programs from the Office Update Web site
3) If that doesn't help, then try using this:
Try using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility detailed here to uninstall
Office:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301
4) Then, if you can't use the Cleanup Utility and reinstall MOS 2003
afterward (save the temporary set up files for future installs when you get
the option) then take a look at this info on LIS:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2003/journ/LISTool.htm.
Change the Local Installation Source After the Installation
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2003/two/ch3/DepC06.htmTaking
Advantage of a Local Installation Source
5) A reference on reading the Temporary Verbose Logs is here. I don't think is the easiest KB for the bell shaped curve of users of Office that Steve Sinofsky has sold it to to

How to use an Office 2003 Setup log file to troubleshoot Setup problems
Good luck.
