Office 2003 SP1 Will Not Install

Gary Thomas

Tried to install the auto update for SP1. It auto
downloaded then tried to install and failed. Downloaded
the client version of the SP1 and tried to install and a
screen came up and said unable to install. Checked the
programs (Microsoft word, excel ect) and they all say
they are now SP1. I then did the auto update again and it
said I needed the SP1 update. I compleatly uninstalled
Office 2003 and reinstalled. Tried to install the
downloaded client version and the same thing came up,
unable to install. But it did put SP1 on the version as
menstioned above again. Again check the auto update and
it says I need SP1. I give up. Why are there so many
problems with this SP1?

I also have failures to install. I could install the update to FrontPage and
OneNote, but all else simply give the error message "Will not install." I
have tried every variation to get this to work.

Downloaded full administrative version. It installed perfectly. Everything
is running great.

The only way that I could get Office 2003 SP1 to install
successfully was to uninstall the whole Office suite
first, then uninstall FrontPage 2003 and then reinstall
Office. I think in my case FrontPage 2003 was causing the
problem.

I'm not sure how interesting this piece of information is to the public at
large, but I wanted to whare it anyway.

Today I tried to update Office 2003 Pro using Office Update. During the
installation it prompted me for the cd-rom which I inserted. However, even
though the file SKU011.CAB was clearly visible on the cd-rom the installer
still complained that the file was missing. I then searched the net and saw
that I was not the only one having this problem.

After a while I finally solved my problem. The security settings on my
C-drive prevents me from creating new directories in the root directory, and
the installer apparently wanted to create C:\MSOCache. So if you don't have
this directory and can't create it yourself you cannot patch Office 2003.

<rant>I haven't checked the Windows logo requirements lately, but I find it
hard to believe that an application that needs to create a directory in the
root directory doesn't violate these logo requirements. I hope that somebody
working on the next version of Office reads this. ;^) And then please tell
your colleague on the Windows Update team that C:\WUTemp is just as bad. ;^)
During the years so many sloppy application developers outside MS just
couldn't stay out of C:\, but is that strange considering that MS has the
same problem?</rant>

I had all the problem you and every one had no zf561402.cab, sku011.cab and than
I said OK. Take out the office 2003 cd and put in front page 2003 VALA it worked
Try it; I do agree it is frustrating process.

Log files are created in the '%temp%\ohotfix' folder that provide an
indication of what might be causing the installation to fail. The file you
want will have a name like 'OHotfix(0000x).log' where 'x' is a number. It
will likely be the most recent of these files. It should be a relatively
small file (mine is only 4kb), and if you attach it in a reply, I'll review
it.

Log files are not generated when you install from Office Update. So
download and install from
