Office 2003 SP2 and KB887979

I have been having a hard time trying to install KB887979 in our
environment--1000 users, trying all different methods (SMS, manual,
batch scripts) it only works about 33% of the time.

I was wondering if anyone could confirm for me that the Office 2003 SP2
patch that was just released includes the fixes made in the Office
KB887979 update? I believe the KB fix was for MS Word.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill

Try doing a repair install, then try the update again:

Method 1 – Open Word, go to Help – Select Detect and Repair

or use Method 2 -

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Click the Office program that you want to repair, and then click Change.
4. In the Maintenance Mode Options dialog box, click Reinstall or Repair,
and then
click Next.
5. In the Reinstall or Repair Office dialog box, click Detect and Repair
errors in my
Office installation, and then click Install.
6. When the repair process is finished, run the update again.

Most likely you will need to have your Office 2003 cd running , will doing
the update

I tried a detect and repair, it still failed to install. I then
uninstalled Office altogether, reinstalled it, the KB887979 update
failed again. We are using an MST file for the installation, but I also
did an installation without the MST file and the update failed again.

We do have security policies and restrictions in our environment, but I
removed the user and the machine from all GPO's and the install still
fails. I can get the patch to install using Windows Update (sometimes),
and I can get the update to install if I double-click to run it
manually (sometimes), and I can get the update to install if I call it
from the RUN command (sometimes). But I cannot find one consistent
method to install this update or Office SP2, especially using SMS
(where I'm just recreating the same calls used in the RUN command
line).

So it looks like something unrelated to Office is causing the failure
but I have no idea what. I can post the verbose log file or at least
the end of it if anyone would like to take a look at it. I've been
struggling with this update for months and it looks like I'm going to
have the same issue(s) with SP2 if I don't get it sorted out.

Thanks,

Bill

Check this first, this should allow you to successfully install it:

:

Can you check the following keys under the following registry
location:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage

Check the CodePage for 849, 932, 936, 949, 950 - if the string value
is
empty/missing, please populate it with:

c_936.nls (like the rest of the values in this section of the
registry)
and the other values, respectively, c_949.nls, c_950.nls, etc. etc.

If this resolves the issue, can you please POST HERE and let everyone
know
?
