Office 2003 SP3 file conversion issue

Since installing Office 2003 SP3 we cannot open some Word files created in
Office 2007.

When trying to open up the doc, the "File Conversion" dialog comes up with 3
options (windows(default), MS-DOS, Other encoding) such as it does when
trying to open up a file that Word doesn't recognize.

In the "Preview" window, the text is all garbled (mixture of symbols and
letters).

I have the Office File compatibility pack installed.

Prior to installing SP3, I was able to open up the same file without any
problem.

Hi -

We are having this same problem. Have you actually tried this Reg fix
yourself? It's not working for me.

Also, if you read the article you mentioned, it does not mention the DWord
you describe as an option, though I do see your logic.

I have also downloaded the latest Word 2003 ADM file, which gave me the
setting "Block opening files before version" and I set this to Disabled.

I ran RSOP on the machine to confirm that it got the policy setting and even
rebooted, but I still had the problem.

Is anyone who is having the problem able to solve it? If so, let us know.

Thanks much.

It looks like you just need to do the same for FileSaveBlock. Once I did
that, I was OK.

However, Dolemite is not getting the error regarding downlevel versions,
rather a different one. I have seen this same error lately and this Reg fix
doesn't solve it. I think this one needs to be treated separately.

I found that if I set the "Block opening files before version" to disabled, I
did not get the registry key in the HKCU hive mentioned in this thread
populated. However, if I set the drop-down to Word 1.x for Windows, the
registry key "FilesBeforeVersion" is created and I am now able to open files.

I would consider this a solution. I suspect for some reason there is a bug
in the word11.adm file that isn't allowing the "FilesBeforeVersion" key to be
created and set to "0" if it is set to disabled in the group policy.
